To his devotees, the Hindu god Vishnu is ereything:
he is the ruler of the heavens and the earth; he is the source
of all life and the cause of all effects. Vishnu is the allpervading
power that preserves and maintains the universe. Whenever the
cosmos is in mortal danger, Vishnu assumes a bodily form (avatar)
and descends from heaven to save it. This small exhibition, drawn
entirely from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts collection, features
a selection of paintings, sculptures and textiles that reveals
some of the forms and colorful myths associated with Vishnu.
Special emphasis is given to two of Vishnu's avatars - Rama and
Krishna.
