From 15 th to 25 th May, the Joan Miro Foundation will be presenting
Going By-byes, a performance by the British artist Stephen Taylor
Woodrow, as part of this season's "Anatomies of the Soul"
cycle in the Foundation's Espai 13.
The artist's intention is to convert the Espai 13 into a hospital ward complete
with every detail: waiting room, beds, medicines, the usual sounds and even
the smell of ether. And complete with patients too: six persons Iying in
six hospital beds, with
only their heavily made-up faces showing, as if they had no bodies. They
are anonymous, silent persons, completely unable to move, almost forming
part of the bed. The distressing effect of this situation provokes different
reactions by the
public: some people speak to them, even though they cannot answer; others
stare hard, not knowing what they can do for them.
Stephen Taylor Woodrow (Kent, 1960) often uses human beings as part of his
works. His previous piece, The Living Paintings, which travelled to many
museums around the world, questioned the frontiers between reality and representation.
The persons intervening in GoingBye-byes- a childish expression meaning
"going to sleep" - remain motionless throughout the six hours
during which the exhibition is open to the public. For this reason, opening
times will be from 12.00 to 18.00
hours, although the rest of the Foundation will keep to its normal timetable.
