JAN VAN DER ZEE

Pavilion Mendini 1
The summer of 1999 sees a new show in the series of Ploeg exhibitions, this time Jan van der Zee (1898-1 988) of Groningen. Van der Zee joined the Ploeg group in the 1 920s. Originally exploring a geometrical, abstract direction, he later developed an expressionist style characterised by a subdued palette. After the Second World War, Van der Zee was one of the few former Ploeg artists to keep pace with contemporary developments. In the 1 950s and 60s, his paintings and woodcuts approached total abstraction.
