To Raise the Water Level in a Fishpond performance at Nanmofang fishpond Beijing, August 15, 1997 Photograph by Robyn Beck Inside Out: New Chinese Art, copresented at SFMOMA and the Asian Art Museum, demonstrates the common language of contemporary art across cultures and boundaries. The incorporation of and responses to major societal influences in China today have resulted in artistic output that is at once introspective and expansive: looking both inside and out. More than 70 works by some 60 artists working in a variety of media, including painting, photography, video, performance art, and installation pieces, as well as more traditional forms such as calligraphy, will be on view at the two institutions in the first major international exhibition of contemporary art from throughout the Chinese regions. |
