Soldiers - The Nineties
For his third solo show at arsFutura Wolfgang Tillmans presents
Soldiers - The Nineties' an installation of newspaper cuttings
and photographs that represents the culmination of a decade-long
study into the mediated portrayal of young men in uniform.
Whether taken from conflicts in Kosovo, the Persian Gulf or
Northern Ireland, what emerges from these images is the apparent
preference of the post-Cold War media for, as opposed to actively
engaged in, the act of war. Viewed en masse, one is forced to
question the function of this abundant, yet almost inherently
redundant imagery, to look beyond their roles as generic signifiers
and view them for the studies of human interaction that they
actually are.
The exhibition is accompanied by the book Wolfgang Tillmans,
Soldiers - TheNineties, Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König,
Cologne, 1999. SFr. 48.--. IBSN 3-88375-377-7.
